This specification is approved for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Scope. This specification covers the general requirements for manually operated illuminated and
non-illuminated multistation, pushbutton switches for use in electronics and communications equipment.
1.2 Classification.
1.2.1 Type designation. The type designation is in the following form and as specified (see 6.2):

1.2.1.1 Style. The switch style is identified by a two letter symbol "SM" followed by a two-digit number
which specifies the design and configuration covered by a single specification sheet.
1.2.1.2 Indication characteristic. Switches are designed by a single letter in accordance with table I.
